Building an email list in 2021 is not hard, though sometimes some difficulties are faced in building an email list mostly because people receive Spam emails a lot these days and most times fall into Scam, even i receive up to 5 Spam emails in my inbox daily telling me I’ve won gifts like an LG TV, The Latest IPhone and some other things i didn’t apply for and are also too good to be true which is obviously a SCAM, that’s why most people stay away from giving their email to unknown or untrusted sources.
Steps to Build an Email list from Scratch
Get A Reliable Email Platform
This is a very crucial part when building an email list because the email platform is responsible for storing your Emails, Sending your Email campaigns and Designing your Email Interface same as the body of the Email, most great Email service providers have great features you can use which makes it so much easier to Build an Email list.
Choosing the wrong Email platform can lead to a lot of Set-Backs and even regrets sometimes, For Example-

8 Strategies to use to Build an Email List from Scratch
1. Offer incentives
Offering incentives is giving valuable information and other valuable things free in exchange for their email and it’s just like a digital currency for buying their email, getting started is simple, all you need to do is give people what they want but before that they have to give their email, you can give EBooks, Online Courses, Content Upgrade and other Valuable Information.
I also use this method and it works perfectly fine, I offer users a free download but before that they will have to Enter their Email and for the scenario of not getting random Emails which are done often, the user will receive the download link to their Email so once they click on the link sent to their inbox for the download their subscription will be confirmed.
2. Tell people what to expect if they subscribe to your Email List
If you just display email Sign-Up forms without telling users what to expect the conversion rate would be low because as i stated earlier a high number of scammers are looking for people’s Emails to send Spam emails and people would be reluctant to give their Email just like that, what you need to do is tell subscribers what to expect by subscribing to your email list, For Example: If I’m running a food network and i need peoples Emails so what i will do is that i will tell subscribers that they will get 3 Secret Food recipes weekly and subscribers will have a reason to subscribe to your email list.
Even I won’t give me Email to random sites to decrease the amount of Spam Emails I receive daily, so you also should think about it, what sounds genuine enough to get a user to Enter their Email and once you get an idea always remember to keep your promise and send valuable content because the user can Unsubscribe from your Email List at any time.
3. Create a landing page
A landing page is a particular standalone page optimized to give the highest conversion rates as possible, this is where interested viewers from external sources like social media, guest post and Paid Ads will be sent to, however this is not a website because it’s just one page and it would be the best place to display your Incentive and Giveaway to attract visitors.
I suggest you use a domain name and hosting for this to make it fast and memorable.
4. Host Giveaways
Hosting Giveaways is another method of getting people’s email easily and it’s simply giving a cash prize or any other valuable prize to a selected winner which can be picked randomly from all subscribers who submitted their Email for the Giveaway, you don’t need to Give a very large amount of money or a very expensive prize if you’re just starting out however the larger the amount of subscribers depends on the worth of prize given.
Giveaways can be hosted on your website/blog and can also be hosted without a website/blog using the other methods of building an email list stated at the bottom of this post, you can start with a small cash prize and then inviting people to the Giveaway through Social media or any other medium and if it favors you, you can also run Paid Ads to invite targeted and valuable visitors to your Giveaway since all they need to do is simply Enter their Email.
5. Create a quiz
Creating a quiz is easy and requires no Giveaway or Incentive, all you need to do is create a quiz, for example if you’re running a website about web development you can create a quiz on the topic- Do I need to create my website myself or I need a web Developer to help me out.
The quiz would ask some questions about the topic and after evaluation it will tell the user if he/she needs a web developer or not. You can place an Email Sign-up form before the quiz or after the quiz.
For Website Owners-
6. Display Email POP-UPs
If you have a website you can take this advantage and display Email POP-UPs on your website. Email POP-UPs are very effective especially when you utilize the earlier Strategies listed above, the Email POP-UP form will be the users main focus for some certain period of time which will then depend on if the user is willing to Subscribe to your Email list or not, but remember if you give them enough reason to subscribe to your Email list they will happily do that.
7. Display Email Sign-up form in content
You can also display Email Sign-up form in the content of your website or a blog post for example if a user is reading an amazing content and suddenly bump into your Email Sign-up form asking for their Email most readers would be happy to give their Email because without even telling they already know what to expect, whenever you try this method you should not destroy your Users Experience just to get their Email to build your Email list but there are some nice and easy way to do collect Users Email Address without destroying anything at all.
8. Place Email Sign-up form in strategic places
You can place Email Sign-up forms in strategic places in your website to ensure it gets enough views as it should get and also to get more Opt-ins, you can place Email forms in your footer, sidebars or your most visited blog post and your most popular page so that way majority of the people who visit your site sees your Email Sign-up form which will definitely help in increasing the subscribers of your Email List.
9. Utilize Exit POP-UPs
If a user is bouncing off your website you should try sliding in an Email Sign-up form, these method has been tested and it really works, if a user visits your site and leaves your site in less than 3 seconds it will do you more bad than good but if you are able to bring them back as much as you want it’s even better, whenever a user wants to exit your site you can slide in an Email Sign-up form telling them what to expect when they give you their email.
Exit POP-UPs give me 10% more conversion rate which is actually very useful for me and I think you should also utilize this great method.
How to start Building an Email List without a website
Ready to Build an Email list but don’t want a website/blog or at least not yet, that’s very possible however having a website makes it easier and more effective but if you’re committed you can get even better results than having a website, here are the few ways to Build an Email List without a website:
Most people in the world now have a social media account but why don’t you use yours to make money. All you need to do is create relevant and engaging content which doesn’t need to be long (250 characters). I recommend creating a Facebook page if you’re using Facebook and then create a tab on your page for subscription to your Email List, and if you have the time I also recommend you try a YouTube channel.
Instead of creating your own blog, you can write for other people’s blog, while you get subscribers for your Email List they get content for their blog, you need to write long, original and relevant content to increase your chances of getting accepted and if you’re looking for blogs for free guest post you can search “Free guest post sites” on Google or any other search engine, you can also try Paid/Sponsored post but if you’re targeting a big blog with a large audience you should know that a paid post can cost as high as $5,000 per post on sites like Forbes.
You can also find profitable guest posts under $200 on guest post sites like Accessory.
Medium is a free blogging platform you can use to grow your Email list, though it’s still blogging but with Medium you just have to create posts which can also be short, you don’t have to worry about Web Hosting, Domain, Site Design or Site Issues, your job is just to create posts, but I don’t recommend free blogging platforms if you’re going into professional blogging.
With this method you can also rank on Search Engines like Google and Yahoo which can also get targeted visitors to your landing page.
If you have little money to invest you can try Paid Ads because you target the exact Audience you want based on Location, interests and personal information like gender or age.
This method is very effective and I recommend you can spend at least $1 per day on Facebook ads.
If you want to start building an Email List don’t look for shortcuts like buying Email Lists but be focused on how to grow your list organically, to get started:
